Harvey Allen: A way of humour drier than any Beefeater-based Martini

After assuming management of Allied Domecq’s thriving duty free operations, he contributed a lot to the sector, main a relentless pipeline of innovation in the channel and demonstrating a powerful dedication to the UK Journey Retail Discussion board. After his retirement he was changed by Charles Richardson as Allied Domecq Duty Free President.

Martin Moodie writes: Apart from his positive contribution to the drinks and duty free industries, Harvey was a heat and genial character with a trademark chuckle and (maybe the attribute I keep in mind most) an nearly everlasting twinkle in his eye. He had a way of humour drier than any Beefeater-based Martini and an immense data of the sectors he graced for therefore a few years. Harvey was of the old skool, a real gents with a penchant for lengthy (and it needs to be mentioned liquid) lunches and a love of sport, significantly rugby.

I and many others spent many an pleasant afternoon in his firm at Twickenham Stadium in London the place he would arrange fantastic picnics in the automotive park and deal with his friends royally each earlier than and after the match. These had been the days on this trade, far much less company than the trendy age and full of charismatic characters, amongst whom Harvey ranked excessive on the checklist.

When Harvey retired, Charles Richardson organised a shock farewell occasion based mostly on the hit tv programme of the time ‘That is Your Life’,  and emceed by the programme’s actual host David Vine. I used to be Editor of Duty-Free Information Worldwide at the time and introduced Harvey with a framed spoof entrance cowl of the journal that lauded each his achievements and his marvellously heat and delightfully eccentric character. He was tickled pink.

What a stunning man. How time passes. He will probably be mourned and remembered with nice affection.
